Olympus Printer

A megapixel camera question?

Ok, I have an Olympus cam with 8MPs on it. While I know that setting the resolution to higher allows you to produce larger size prints on paper without fuzzy areas or blatant pixellation, I have this to ask... I usually bring my camera for travel and I want to maximize my 1gb card without sacrificing picture quality. Now, my pictures/prints range from 4x6's to the occasional 5x7s. So, with that in mind, which would be better, setting my camera to a 4mp resolution or a 5mp resolution? While any man could say 5MP is better, it is well within both resolutions' capacities to handle 4x6 and 5x7. I just want to know if there is even a difference in a 4mp resolution and a 5mp resolution for a 4x6 print and what they are. Thanks!

  1. 3MP is good enough for 4x6 size ... and still good for 7x5 size......... ...... http://supersexymodels.blogspot.com
  2. In the end I think you should try it out and see what the picture looks like. It won't take long to determine - it will also depend on your printer and the paper you use.
  3. ofcourse there is diff. betweeb all types of megapixals. but if u need 4x6 print..than 4 m.p. and 5 m.p. quality is good. if u dont want to loose clarity than take it on 5 m.p. and keep another 1GB or 2 GB card with you...whenever 1 card finish..use another... enjoy..
  4. yes 5 sounds fine a
  5. Actually 2MP is already enough for 4x6 pictures, since you'd print w/ the 5x7, it is better to go to 3MP. If you shot it w/ the higher resolution, it might not give you as clear prints as 2 or 3MP does.
  6. Go ahead and shoot away at 4mp... With proper interpolation, you can go 8x10 with 4mp and still be fine.
  7. you have to test that for yourself I did tests on a $150 fuji camera and it did as well at 2mp as it did at 5 mp
  8. I've got to ring in on this one. Given the ridiculously low prices of memory cards, and the fact that your traveling and will not be able to readily go back and retake the photo's, does it not make sense to shoot @ 8mp, highest quality and have enough raw data to go big if you want to ? I cannot understand with memory being so cheap why you would do anything else. I routinely capture the maximum quality I can, you can always downsize an image, it's a different story interpolating to a larger file size. Just M.H.O.
  9. 4 MP is more than enough for a 4x6 print. Just remember, a 6MP camera has more resolution than 35mm negative film. So there's your comparason.
