How far have you hiked if you have hiked 2/3 of the way down Mt. Olympus?

Notes: Mt. Olympus: 2917 (meters), 9570 (feet) You have stared at the top and come 2/3 of the way down. How far have you come? (Please show as much work as you can. You don't have to though) Also it isn't a math problem. I'm writing a paper and I WANTED to put it in there. My paper is about greek gods. Thanks for your help.

  1. You are correct in stating that Mount Olympus, being the highest mountain in Greece, is 2,917 meters high (9,570 feet) ... meaning that it is 2,917 meters above sea level. If you were to hike a straight line that is 2,917 meters 2/3 of the way, you would have traveled: (2/3) x 2,917 meters = 1, 917 meters However, the surfaces of mountains are inevitable not straight lines and, thus, you would have traveled significantly more than 1,917 meters (but one can not ascertain exactly how far with the information given).
  2. I agree with the first answer you received. I looked at many websites and there are several hiking trails on Mt Olympus but without buying a map could not ascertain their lengths. Various outfitters talked about hiking the mountain in anywhere from 5 hours to 2 days. I guess it depends on where you start and which trail you use. Since there is no straight line involved the answer is subjective. Best of luck on your paper.
  3. I/3 less than all the way.
  4. Mount Olympus is a mythical place. You couldn't hike there.
