What is the difference between a regular printer and a photo printer?

I just purchased a Canon PIXMA MP240. I got it the last day of the Boxing Day sale. Before I always used Hewlett Packard What will the differences between this photo printer and my regular printer?

1. elementry my dear watson. ask yourself what the difference between a printed sheet and a photo. you shouldn't have to ask this question.
2. Photo printers usually have six ink colours and can print to the edge of the paper. The term photo printer is just for marketing it doesn't have a definite meaning.
